This summer, Dev Hynes releases "Freetown Sound," the third album under his current alias Blood Orange.

Drawing from a rich oeuvre of techniques and references, the album unfolds almost like a theatrical performance, conjuring unexpected moods, voices, and eras. Freetown, the birthplace of Dev's father and the capital of Sierra Leone, lends its name to the album. Thematically, it is Blood Orange's most personal and political album to date, addressing issues such as race, religion, gender, and sexism. Musically, Hynes was inspired by the Dust Brothers' albums: "It's very cut and paste. Like my version of Paul's Boutique. It kind of plays like a long mixtape."

His ever-expanding roster of collaborators this time includes newcomer Empress Of, Kindness, Nelly Furtado, and Carly Rae Jepsen.
